Design / Consistency at every scale
The small-team guide to a scalable design system
The handful of reusable decisions that keep your site consistent as the business grows.
A useful design system can begin with just a few shared rules. Define a small spacing scale, a consistent type hierarchy, a purposeful color palette and reusable patterns for actions and cards.
Document states as well as appearances. Buttons need hover, disabled and focus treatments. Forms should explain success and failure. Cards should accommodate different lengths of content without breaking the rhythm of the page.
Keep the system flexible enough for real use. Reuse decisions that should remain consistent, but leave room for distinct editorial moments. The goal is not to make every page identical. It is to make every page recognizably part of the same product.
